Sesame Tofu

We had to buy TWO different colours of sesame seeds??

So, we did. And soon after eating these we regretted nothing!

Tofu is a fantastic replacement for animal meats as it’s free of cholesterol and saturated fat.

What else is neat?

Tofu acts like a sponge, soaking up the flavours of whatever it is cooked in (try tofu stir-fry with peanut sauce. Heaaaaven!).

Enjoy on their own, as an appy, or further cut up into a stir-fry or salad.

Ingredients (Tofu):

  • 1 lb. (454 grams; 1 package) extra-firm tofu, drained
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds (a mixture of white and black)
  • 2 tbsp. canola oil

Ingredients (Sauce):

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp. minced ginger
  • 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar
  • 2 1/2 tbsp. low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. corn starch

How to:

  1. Cut tofu into 1/2″ slices (you should have 12 slices total), patting each dry with a paper towel. Mix together sesame seeds and scatter evenly onto a plate. Place tofu on plate, pat one side, flip, and coat the other in the seeds.
  2. In a large, non-stick pan over medium heat, add oil. Add tofu slices (seed side down). Cook each side until golden brown. Remove tofu from the pan.
  3. Meanwhile, mix together the sauce ingredients. Using the same pan, add the sauce and cook until thick. Pour over tofu and serve.

Make it a meal:

  • Eat as is or serve as an appy
  • Slice up into a salad
  • Make sure you add vegetables (steamed would match well) and starch (try brown rice)
