Maple Fried Brussels Sprouts

Who likes Brussels sprouts? (cue the crickets…)

Growing up, TV taught us that Brussels sprouts, liver and onions, and mutton were foods that no one enjoyed. The other night at a pizza restaurant, we had them roasted on a pizza.

Mind blowing.

Makes…a variety of servings; for every person, use ~5 sprouts each

The other day the Christmas turkey was baking, which meant the oven was unavailable. Though the roasted version is fabulous, we was left with either the microwave or a stove top pan. Utilizing a few handy ingredients, we were able to introduce new flavours to good old Brussels sprouts: garlic and maple syrup.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • Brussels Sprouts, sliced thin*
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Pure maple syrup

How to:

  1. Over medium heat, add oil to a fry pan. Add sprouts. Stir and continue to flip until sides of sprouts are browned. Still retain some green! Burning the sprouts is not the intention (see photos above).
  2. Stir in garlic and a small splash of maple syrup. Stir to cover the sprouts allowing the syrup to burn off.

Make it a meal:

  • Use as the vegetable in a balanced meal. Pair with fish and rice pilaf.
  • Eat as a snack.
